The Chevening Scholarship is the United Kingdom government’s global scholarship program, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organizations. It offers a fully funded one-year master’s degree at any UK university to outstanding emerging leaders from over 160 countries and territories. If you are a working professional or recent graduate with leadership potential and a clear plan to create change in your home country, Chevening may be the single most valuable scholarship you can apply for. Here is everything a future applicant needs to know.
What Is the Chevening Scholarship?
Chevening is not a merit scholarship that rewards only academic grades. It selects future leaders, decision-makers, and opinion-formers — people who will use their UK education to drive impact in areas such as economic growth, climate action, public policy, or social development back home. The program includes a worldwide alumni network of more than 60,000 professionals, plus exclusive networking events during your year in the UK. Because it is a leadership award, every part of the application — essays, references, and interview — is designed to test your leadership, networking ability, and post-study plans rather than just your transcripts.
Eligibility Criteria
Chevening’s eligibility rules are strict, and ineligible applications are rejected without review. You must:
- Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.
- Commit to returning to your home country for at least two years after your scholarship ends.
- Have at least two years of work experience, equivalent to 2,800 hours, gained after completing your undergraduate degree. This can include full-time or part-time employment, paid or voluntary work.
- Hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for admission to a UK master’s program.
- Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and secure an unconditional offer from at least one of them by the deadline set in the application timeline.
Note that applying for Chevening is completely free — Chevening does not work with or endorse any third party that charges for application support, and paying someone offers no advantage.
What the Scholarship Covers
Chevening is fully funded. The award covers your university tuition fees, a monthly stipend for accommodation and living expenses, economy travel to and from the UK, an arrival allowance, a homeward departure allowance, the cost of one visa application, and a travel grant to attend Chevening events across the UK. In short, a successful scholar can complete the degree without paying out of pocket for the essentials of study and life in the UK.
The Application Timeline and the Four Essays
Applications typically open in early August and close in early October each year. After eligibility checks and a reading committee review over the winter, shortlisted candidates are invited to interviews in the spring, with final results announced in the summer and courses beginning in September or October of the following year. The written application centers on four essays of several hundred words each — the heart of your candidacy:
The four essays
Leadership and influence: concrete examples of how you have led people or projects and influenced outcomes. Networking and relationship building: how you build and maintain professional relationships, and how you will engage with the Chevening community. Studying in the UK: why your three chosen courses are the right fit — Chevening expects you to have researched specific modules and explain how they connect to your goals. Career plan: a clear short, medium, and long-term plan showing how the degree feeds into your return-home ambitions. Write in your own words: Chevening strictly prohibits AI-generated answers and uses detection software to identify them.
The Interview and How to Stand Out
Interviews take place at the British embassy or high commission in your home country. Expect probing questions on the same four areas as the essays — the panel will test whether your plans are realistic and whether you genuinely intend to return home and create impact. Bring specific, recent examples rather than general claims, and be ready to explain why your first-choice course is the best route to your goals. Strong applications share three traits: evidence of leadership with measurable results, a career plan that is ambitious yet achievable, and a convincing link between the UK degree and the change you want to make at home. Start preparing months before the portal opens — gathering work-experience evidence, drafting essays, and researching courses all take longer than expected.
